The Chicago Cubs temporarily shut down their Arizona Instructional League season after one of their players tested positive for COVID-19.
The test was taken Thursday night, and the positive result was revealed Friday. The Cubs medical staff deemed it safe to return to the complex Saturday, and they played an intrasquad game. But games Monday and Tuesday were canceled out of an abundance of caution, a source confirmed.
The Cubs are the latest team to cancel Instructional League games. The Texas Rangers temporarily shut down their camp last month after discovering positive tests to two players, but they later resumed activities.
The Cubs were the only major-league team not to have a positive COVID-19 test among its entire player roster this season. The Cubs quarantined one minor-league pitcher last month after he was exposed to someone outside the organization who was positive, according to a team source. The pitcher resumed activities later in the month.
Bob Nightengale of Mid American Herald first reported the Cubs canceled games this week.
